When we sold our house earlier than expected, we knew our travel plans would be out of sync with the recommended seasonal route around Australia. That twist of timing is how we found ourselves travelling during peak season, doing our best to escape the January heat by seeking out cooler mountain climates.
We spent an amazing two weeks with family over the Christmas period at Palmer Road, Kyvalley. We spent our time relaxing with immediate family, reconnecting with extended family and friends, and fine-tuning, modifying, and preparing our setup for the next stage of our journey.
A new year has a way of inviting reflection. For us, it’s brought clarity, courage, and a decision that’s been quietly calling for some time now.
Seven nights at our favorite beach destination turned out to be exactly what we needed—a truly relaxing escape. For the past four years, we’ve made the Limestone Coast our go-to pre-Christmas haven, and despite its growing popularity, Southend remains a tranquil seaside retreat nestled at the southern tip of Rivoli Bay. With a population of just 263 + (as stated on the town’s welcome sign to incorporate the holiday season population growth), Southend offers an ocean view caravan park, a basic general store, and a serene bush camp behind the sand dunes, which is where we stay.
Our visit to Lower Glenelg National Park was a somewhat spontaneous decision, and it turned out to be a truly rewarding experience. Despite a few rainy days, we were able to fully appreciate the stunning beauty of this remarkable park. The Pritchard campsite offers two levels: an upper and a lower section. The lower level features a boat ramp and smaller sites not ideal for larger caravans, while we opted for a spacious site (Site 19) on the upper level. It provided picturesque river views and was just a short walk to the toilet facilities.
After a whirlwind few months, it still feels surreal to be officially on the road full-time! The sale of our house happened much faster than we anticipated, so we’ll be returning to spend Christmas with family and say our goodbyes before setting off to explore this incredible country. To be honest, amidst the chaos of selling and packing up, we haven’t settled on a specific direction yet. For someone like me, who thrives on being super organised and having a clear plan, this is definitely a departure from the norm—but that’s part of the magic of traveling. In our experience, the unexpected moments and spontaneous decisions often lead to the best adventures!
After 18 wonderful years, we've handed over the keys to 156 Trotting Terrace (The Farrow's as it became referred to by most) following a quick sale and 45-day settlement. Most of our belongings are now gone, and we've packed the essentials into "eLCie" the Landcruiser and “Lottie” the caravan—our new mobile home.
